Our Initiative

Musical Groups

Active musical groups for interested students to participate in include:

  • the Tri-Institutional Orchestra, composed of WCMC students, NYP employees and Rockefeller personnel
  • the WCMC Chamber Music Society, which includes piano trios, string quartets, vocalists and duos of all kinds
  • the Weill Cornell Jazz Ensemble, who play at hospital and medical college functions
  • the AneuRhythms, an a cappella group composed of students and faculty who deliver lively performances at events throughout the year

Music as Medicine

Through Weill Cornell Medicine’s affiliation with NewYork-Presbyterian, the students and faculty of the Music & Medicine Initiative develop partnerships to integrate music into medical practice. Our students perform for patients and families in:

  • monthly mini-concerts at NYP
  • the Caregivers Concert series at the Ronald Perelman Heart Center
  • the Weill Cornell Medicine Hematology/Oncology Infusion Center, PostAnesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Palliative Care Unit

Music in the Community

Bringing music to the Weill Cornell Medicine community and New York City is a vital part of our mission. Music & Medicine community events include:

  • orchestral benefit concerts for the Weill Cornell Community Clinic, Center for Human Rights and Center for the Performing Artist
  • Weill Cornell Medicine ceremonies, including graduation at Carnegie Hall
  • chamber music concerts for hospital employees
  • coffeehouse, open mic night and Ascensus events for the Weill Cornell Medicine student body
  • performances for hospital communities at the Gross Anatomy Memorial Service, Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute, Macho (Motivating Action Through Community Health Outreach) Fundraiser and Weill Cornell Community Clinic Fundraiser

Student Outreach

We also reach out to our student body at large to increase participation in musical activities, organizing and sponsoring trips to NYC concerts and events. Recent events include:

  • Lang Lang and the San Diego Symphony at Carnegie Hall
  • Rigoletto, La Boheme and La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera
